Burnside dad loses almost three and a half stone during lockdown

A Burnside dad has shed almost three and a half stone since lockdown began…. And he says it’s the best he has ever felt.

Gareth Rodgers joined WW a week before restrictions were announced on March 23, weighing in at 23 stone and five pounds.

He admits he feared staying home during the coronavirus pandemic would derail his weight loss journey before it had even begun.

“I thought ‘Oh well, there goes my weight loss and improved fitness levels….’,” he said.

“But then I got my positive head on, spoke to my inner self and said ‘I CAN and WILL’ make a success of this lockdown.

“I can either let it ruin me or I can get my head together and put myself in a good place to make the lockdown benefit me.”

Now on furlough, the 47-year-old salesman is focusing on his health and wellness – spending time cooking healthy meals and joining in the virtual workshops to help him stay on track.

He said: “I now track everything that goes into my mouth, and I have cut out all fizzy drinks, including 3 energy drinks I was taking every day, increased my water intake and I take time to cook and prepare food.

“It’s brought my family together – we are all spending so much time together and we have made it suit and fit family life.

“My two kids Tyler and Jasmin help me pick meals from the WW app, and we are all eating together and enjoying our food much more.

“Our favourite meal just now is the turkey and sweet potato lasagne….its amazing.”

Gareth has lost 46 pounds in eight weeks, now weighing in at 20 stone and one pound.

But it’s not just about the number on the scales: His stamina has soared since he began walking everyday.

Gareth’s wife Alison has also lost half a stone by joining him on his daily stroll – and has noticed a difference in her own fitness levels too.

“Before I lost weight I was struggling to walk 2km, and this was taking me 12 mins to walk. I was actually getting out of breath,” he said. “Now I can walk 10k without getting out of breath!”

He added: “I haven’t let the lockdown take control of me. I have taken control of the lockdown and worked on things that I know I can influence.

“There’s no point worrying about what you can’t control as it would drive you mad.

“I now feel a greater sense of freedom. I’m feel confident that my new habits will become permanent, and when I get back to some sort of normality this will be the new me.”
